This German Apple Cake is buttery, fluffy, and moist. Another plus: the slices of apples can be arranged in multiple ways to create intricate (but simple to make) designs that will definitely win some “oohs” and “ahhs.”
I received this recipe from my friend Ling, who always brings this to dinner parties, just in time for me to make it for Thanksgiving. It was such a hit that I’ll be baking this for Christmas too. She generously is allowing me to share it with you all as well!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of butter (unsalted)
- 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup of flour
- 1/2 tsp of baking powder
- 2 tbsp of milk
- 2 whole apples sliced and peeled
- cinnamon for decoration and taste
- powdered sugar for decoration and taste
Directions:
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees F
- Beat the eggs and sugar together until smooth
- Add the melted butter and continue to beat the mixture until fully combined
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder and then add to the wet ingredients above
- Stir in the milk
- Pour the batter into a greased 9 or 10-inch pan
- Place the apple wedges into the batter, in whichever pattern you please
- Sprinkle cinnamon on top
- Bake for 30 – 35 minutes, until the top is golden and when a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean
- Let cool and sprinkle some powdered sugar if desired
Admittedly, I didn’t have time to peel the apples (I was in a pinch), so I left the skin on. The red gala apple skin ended up brightening the cake and it wasn’t tough at all once baked!
